Afflicted by the Scarlet Rot from birth, Malenia's existence was marked by pain, and the Rot gradually blinded her over time. Despite this curse, she dedicated her life to protecting her twin brother, Miquella, who sought to cure them both through his own alchemical experiments. Her loyalty drove her to become a legendary duelist, though she was not undefeated: she lost her duel against Radahn, the Starscourge—a cataclysmic clash that ended only when she unleashed the full power of the Rot, blooming into the Scarlet Rot Goddess while Miquella was already missing, and which nearly destroyed Caelid. She also ultimately fell to the Tarnished. The Haligtree was grown as a sanctuary for all rejected by the Golden Order, not solely for Malenia and Miquella.

She stands motionless before her brother's cocoon, her prosthetic arm gleaming with a dull, metallic sheen against the pale bark of the Haligtree.
